If so, we should talk! Our client, a well-established and growing company in the energy sector, based in downtown Calgary, is seeking a Controller to join their Finance leadership team. This is a key role for an experienced accounting professional who brings strong technical expertise, sound judgment, and the ability to balance hands-on execution with strategic oversight.

Reporting to the VP of Finance, the Controller is someone who values accuracy, transparency, and collaboration. In this role, you will be responsible for the integrity of the organization’s financial reporting and accounting operations while maintaining oversight on the company’s risk and compliance status. You will play a critical part in supporting business decision-making, strengthening financial governance, and ensuring the organization is well-positioned for continued growth.

As a Controller, you will oversee the organization’s day-to-day accounting while shaping processes, controls, and reporting frameworks. This position requires a detail-oriented and proactive leader who can partner effectively with cross-functional teams, senior leadership, and external parties.

Key responsibilities of the role include:
Strategic Leadership & Risk Management
  • Serve as a steward of financial governance and accounting-related risk management, ensuring accounting policies, internal controls, and reporting practices safeguard company assets and support compliance across jurisdictions
  • Anticipate and mitigate financial, regulatory, and operational risks through trend analysis, assessing control effectiveness, and presenting data-driven observations and proposals to leadership
  • Lead initiatives to align practices with both IFRS and emerging regulatory frameworks
 
Financial Reporting & Decision Support
  • Oversee financial reporting processes, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance
  • Prepare and review budget-to-actual analyses, financial statements and reporting packages, variance explanations, and working papers to support informed decision-making at the executive level
  • Drive enhancements in reporting systems and dashboards
  • Manage cash, intercompany reconciliations, and external filings
  • Support external audit processes and act as a primary point of contact for auditors and advisors

Accounting Operations & Internal Controls
  • Lead the month-end and year-end close processes
  • Oversee general banking operations, ledger integrity, reconciliations, and intercompany reconciliations
  • Ensure finance systems and reporting tools support accuracy, scalability, and auditability
  • Ensure compliance with tax obligations and coordinate external filings

Leadership, Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team, fostering accountability and continuous improvement
  • Partner with Finance leadership and cross-functional stakeholders to provide clear financial insight and guidance
  • Contribute to process improvements and special projects aligned with organizational priorities
  • Support M&A activities, including financial due diligence, integration planning, and alignment with accounting and governance standards

The right candidate will demonstrate on their resume:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 7-10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, with 3-5+ years in a senior accounting leadership role (such as Controller, Senior Manager, or equivalent)
  • CPA designation is strongly preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of IFRS accounting standards, controls, and financial governance
  • Proven abilities in technical accounting and experience with full-cycle financial reporting, month-end, and year-end processes
  • Experience leading, mentoring, and developing teams
  • Ability to communicate clearly with stakeholders, working with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory bodies
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience working with ERP systems and PowerBI; additional experience with advanced reporting or data visualization tools would be considered an asset
  • Previous experience in the energy sector, with mergers and acquisitions, multi-entity, growth-oriented, and/or complex organizations, would also be considered an asset

This role offers a flexible/hybrid work environment (up to two days per week from home) upon successful completion of the probationary period. Working hours are standard (40-hour work week, Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.), with flexibility required during key reporting periods.
