About the Role
We are looking for a skilled MS SQL Server Database Administrator (DBA) to join our team. This role is hands-on and requires strong expertise in managing, monitoring, and tuning SQL Server databases. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and comfortable working in a dynamic environment with both operational and development responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain MS SQL Server databases, including backup jobs and availability groups for replication.
- Monitor performance, disk space, and SQL database alerts (especially disk space usage and severe errors).
- Perform debugging and forensic analysis using detailed performance data, run history, and change logs.
- Prioritize and execute tuning activities, focusing on the worst-performing 1% of queries and processes.
- Identify and resolve deadlocks, optimize SQL syntax, indexes, indexed views, and application design.
- Conduct index usage analysis, review column histogram statistics and transaction log contents when required.
- Work on data integration projects with customer data.
- Utilize text processing and data tools such as Super-SED, GitHub XSV, and Linux-style commands (sort, diff, head, tail, etc.).
- Perform general data integration tasks and validation using multiple tools, including XLSX to CSV conversions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Math, Physics or similar/related field.
- Proven experience as a SQL Server DBA.
- Strong knowledge of MS SQL Server internals, indexing, and performance tuning.
- Hands-on experience with availability groups, replication, and backup strategies.
- Ability to analyze and troubleshoot complex SQL performance issues.
- Experience with data integration tools and working with large datasets.
- Familiarity with scripting and text processing utilities (Linux-style preferred).
- Strong problem-solving and debugging skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
Nice to Have
- Knowledge of MS SQL Spatial / Geography, ArcGIS, GIS Tiff.
- Familiarity with GIS Spatial files – working with shapefiles and integrating shapefile data using tools like QGIS, Excel, GitHub XSV, OGR2OGR, GDAL.
- Experience with Power BI Services / Power BI Desktop.
- Familiarity with Oracle databases.
- Willingness and flexibility to work on weekends and occasional evenings.
